North Sumatra Emblon
The Meaning of The Emblon of North Sumatra

The symbol shows a scepter with a fist at one end clutching a chain which holds a shield. This symbolizes the determined will of the people of North Sumatra who fought against imperialism, feudalism, and communism.

A five pointed star on the shield which hangs from the chain symbolizes the people's unity in defending Pancasila ( The Five Principles).

In the center of the shield is a spider web with pictures of a rubber tree, a palm tree, a tobacco leaf, a fish and a rice leaf. On the left of the spider web there is a factory and on the right there is a port. All of these symbolize the beauty and overwhelming natural resources of North Sumatra.

To the left of the shield, there is a heaa of rice with 45 grains on it. On the right hand side of the shield, there is a stalk of cotton with 17 boIls of cotton on it; the spider web in the center of the shield has 8 sides. All of these symbolize the day, month, and the year of Indonesia's Independence. All of these symbols put together under the fist at the end of a scepter, symbolize cultural characteristics and reflect national power, patriotism, and the defense of justice.

Bukit Barisan with its five peaks symbolizes a societal system which has a supreme personality and an encouraging, dynamic, and unified cooperation.
