South Tapanuli

South Tapanuli is situated in the southern part of North Sumatra and shares borders with West Sumatra and Riau. It is about 1,889,650 Ha. in size and supports a population of about 950,000 which is the biggest population among the subdistricts.

This region has people from various tribes including Mandailing, Angkola and Sipirok. The people have a strong sense of togetherness. In daily life they practice the motto of "SIALA SAMPAGUL" which means equality. In addition they practice "Marsialapari" which is the principle of helping each other in society.

Padang Sidempuan is the capital city of this region. It is popularly known as "Kota Salak" (Snake Fruit City) since it has a great number of salak farms. This fruit is one of the region's export commodities and is marketed in Medan, Jakarta and abroad.

It is also a road used by passengers going from Medan to Padang (West Sumatra) and Pekan Baru or vice versa. This area has many beautiful and interesting tourists attractions such as Sipirok, Candi Portibi, Panyabungan Tonga etc.
